Pipe Wrench Plumbing

Same Day Service Guaranteed!

Do you take access to clean water for granted? Many of us do. However, access to safe and clean water is limited for many people throughout the world. World Plumbing Day is celebrated on March 11th every year to acknowledge the important role the plumbing industry plays in our health and safety.

Here are a few ways that advancements in the plumbing industry have contributed to helping the environment and providing people with clean fresh water, heating, and sanitation:
  • Water Reuse - Rainwater harvesting, grey water systems and sewage water recycling are all great ways to increase the efficiency and usage of water.
  • Desalination - Most of the water on the planet is salt water. Although filtration has been expensive in the past, new energy efficient methods have increased the viability of desalination.
  • Energy Efficiency - Many water heaters and appliances now use less water and energy. These high efficiency and energy star rated appliances are much more environmentally friendly than those made even a few years earlier.

Spotting plumbing issues early on is a great way to avoid major problems. Although Pipe Wrench Plumbing is  here to help you when you experience any plumbing problems, there are several steps you can take to reduce the need for maintenance.

Here are five tips on how you can prevent plumbing problems in your home:
  • Be Alert - Have you noticed anything unusual? Small leaks and damp cabinets could be a sign of a greater issue. Be aware of your surroundings and catch plumbing problems early on.
  • Early Repairs - Don't delay fixing a leaky faucet. This moisture can encourage mold and mildew growth.
  • Understand Your Appliances - Everyone in your household should know how to shut off the main valve to the water supply. It is also important to know how to shut off appliances like sinks, toilets, and washing machines. Knowing how to turn off your water can prevent flood damage.
  • Simple Plumbing Tools - A plunger, pipe wrench and sewer snake are great to have on hand.  They can take care of several small plumbing problems. If you are still having trouble, remember to call us for help!
  • Cold Weather Care - Avoid frozen pipes during the winter by insulating exposed pipes, removing exterior hoses and applying insulating caps to outdoor fixtures. If you're pipes do freeze, we recommend calling our emergency plumbing service to avoid cracks and leaks.
If these preventative steps don't work, we are happy to help you address your plumbing needs. Give us a call at 865-583-3957 or visit us online at www.pipewrenchplumbing.com

As the temperature drops, the chance of problems with your house plumbing increases. Luckily, homeowners can take steps to prevent plumbing problems. Let’s take a look at the most effective ways to prevent a winter plumbing emergency.

Freezing pipes - Wrap each pipe with a foam tube to avoid your pipes to freeze up.

Fix leaks – Check all faucets in your kitchen and bathrooms for any leaks and puddles. Contact Pipe Wrench Plumbing immediately if you happen to notice any leaks.

Empty your hot water heater – If you’re experiencing rust in your hot water heater, it’s important to purchase a new one.

Get rid of outdoor hose – Pack away your gardening hose and save it for next season.

Shut-off valves – Drain the hose from the outside lines. Water left in the lines can freeze and cause major damage.

Clean your sump pump pit – When exposed to severe weather, your pump can: freeze up, stop working and cause flooding.

Tips To Consider When Choosing A Plumber

Pipe Wrench Plumbing

Although most homeowners may feel it’s easier to try and handle common plumbing issues themselves, often times these tasks end up being much more difficult than first expected. Not all home improvement tasks are created equal!

When it comes to hiring a plumber, this should be a well thought out decision. Plumbers handle some of the most important structures of your home including faucets, toilets and water heaters, therefore this isn't a decision you want to rush.  If you don’t do proper research, you may be faced with costly and dangerous repairs down the road.

Licensure:  Most states require plumbers to hold a license. If your state doesn't require licensing, do your research! Be sure the plumber you’re choosing is credible and reliable.

Insurance:  No matter what, plumbers should always be insured and even sometimes bonded. Insurance is extremely important in protecting both you and the plumber in case of any accidents or injuries.

Pricing: After reviewing what works needs to be done in your home, your plumber should be able to give you an accurate estimate. Be sure to get a couple of estimates to make sure all prices are within the same range.

Warranty: Plumbers should guarantee their work and all parts. If for some reason the plumber you've selected isn't guaranteeing their work for at least one year, you may want to look into hiring someone else.

References:  Word of mouth is usually the best way to find a reliable plumber. Any plumber with a good reputation and has been in a business for quite some time will be well known by the people in your area. Ask around!

Prevent Common Plumbing Problems With These Tips

Pipe Wrench Plumbing

Same Day Service Guaranteed!

At Pipe Wrench Plumbing, we understand that most homeowners don't care to know everything there is about their plumbing systems, especially since your local Knoxville Plumbers specialize in this area and can fix your problems quickly and efficiently. While we are happy to help, we do believe it is important that homeowners educate themselves on how to prevent future plumbing problems. We've gathered some plumbing tips to help get you started.

Check out the following:
  • Run water down the drain before and after using the garbage disposer to prevent drains and pipes from getting clogged.
  • Locate your emergency shutoff valves underneath sinks and toilets. In the event of a flood, water accumulates quickly, leaving you little time before damage is inevitable.
  • Change air conditioner filters monthly. Dust build up affects the efficiency of the system and cause further harm your air conditioning unit or heat pump.
  • Clear drains weekly using vinegar and boiling water.
  • Check all faucets to make sure water is flowing freely. If a faucet is leaking, you may have cracked pipes.
  • Be mindful of what you pour down the sink. This is especially important in the kitchen where waste disposal is frequent.
  • Keep an eye on your water meter for any dramatic or unusual increases in usage. A noticeable spike often indicates a leak somewhere on the property.
  • Set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Do not flush tissue, cotton balls, makeup pads, sanitary products, or diapers down the toilet. Doing so will cause it to clog.
  • Grind oranges and lemons in the garbage disposer for 30 seconds to eliminate odors. Thoroughly rinse remaining debris away.
  • Make sure to include strainers in the tub and shower to catch hair and soap chips. Clean the strainers regularly to prevent clogging.
Pipe Wrench Plumbing is Knoxville's number 1 plumbing company! We pride ourselves on delivering fast and affordable services to our customers. If you are having a problem with your plumbing system, contact us. A representative will be happy to inform you on the necessary steps to take. With the temperatures continuing to drop, there is no better time to protect your pipes from freezing. If you are a homeowner and haven’t already taken action to protect your pipes from freezing, now may be a good time to do so. Did you know one of the he first signs of frozen pipes is when a faucet won’t produce water?

If you happen to face the unfortunate situation of frozen pipes, there are a few things you can do to help thaw your pipes out.
  • As soon as you realize the pipe is frozen, shut off the main valve, and open the nearest faucet so when it thaws the pipes can drain.
  • Have containers and drop clothes near by in case leaks occur.
  • Apply the following techniques to warm the frozen pipes:
    • If you have a heating pad available, wrap it around the pipe to warm it up.
    • Get a heat lamp and place it 8 or more inches behind the wall, floor or ceiling to roast up the pipes
    • Last resort, wrap the pipe in rags and pour hot water on the rags.
