Did you know that your water heater is the second largest expense in your home?  In most households, it accounts for about 18% of your monthly utility bill.  Fortunately, there are ways to cut down on your bills.

Tips to Reduce your Water Heating Bill:
  • Energy Star – New energy-efficient water heaters cost more than a standard water heater up front, but they can save you money over the lifetime of the appliance.
  • Natural Gas - Natural gas on-demand and tankless water heaters heat water directly without using a storage tank.  This can result in up to a 30% energy savings.
  • Heat Traps – Installing heat traps on hot and cold pipes at the water heater can help prevent heat loss.  While new water heaters generally have built in heat traps, many older models do not.
  • Insulation – Insulate your storage tank and the hot and cold water pipes connected to your water heater.
  • Temperature – Set your thermostat to 120 degrees in order to get comfortable hot water for most uses.
The US Department of Energy offers several tips on how you can further improve the energy-efficiency of your home and reduce your water heating bill.  For more information on all of your water heater repair and installation needs, contact Pipe Wrench Plumbing!  We are happy to help you with all of your plumbing needs.  Call 865-583-3957 for service.

Same Day Service Guaranteed!

Happy Memorial Day!  Many friends and family members will be gathering together to honor the men and women who have died in service today.  If you are planning on entertaining, especially if you will be cooking, there are ways to save energy and still have fun.  Here are a few tips on how to have an energy-efficient Memorial Day.

Memorial Day Energy Saving Tips:
  • Kitchen Oven – Keep the door to the oven closed!  Every time you open the door the temperature can drop as much as 25 degrees.
  • Keep Food Covered – If you are storing food in your refrigerator, make sure that it is covered.  Your refrigerator’s compressor works harder to cool moist air.  Keeping food covered will keep your fridge smelling fresh too!
  • Clean Your Fridge – The coils on the back of your fridge should be cleaned once a year.  This helps the compressor cool faster.  A clean running fridge will use less energy and extend the life of your kitchen appliance.
  • Dishwasher – Dishwashers almost always use less water than washing dishes by hand.  Especially if you are washing several dishes.  If you don’t have a dishwasher, don’t leave the water running in between washing dishes.
If you encounter any plumbing problems this Memorial Day, remember that you can call Pipe Wrench Plumbing for all of your emergency plumbing repair needs.  Call 865-583-3957 to contact our offce with any questions or concerns you may have.

Many people look for ways to save water during hot spring and summer months.  In addition to conserving an important resource, these plumbing tips can help you cut your water bill too!  Here are a few simple ways to save water and money this year.

Water Saving Tips:
  • Dishwasher – If you have more than two people in your house, using the dishwasher will actually save you water!  Surprisingly, it uses more water to wash dishes by hand.
  • Shower – Always pick showering over taking a bath.  Low-flow showerheads can reduce your water consumption to just 10 gallons per shower.
  • Toilet – Did you know that flushing the toilet uses more water than anything else in your home?  That is why it is so important to replace older toilets and to fix any leaks.
  • Faucets – A dripping faucet can waste up to 2700 gallons per year.  Fixing a leaky faucet can save you a lot of water and money.
  • Lawn Care – Spread mulch around flower beds, trees, shrubs and gardens.  This will help retain moisture so that you don’t have to water your plants as often.

Looking to save some money this spring?  With a solid energy saving strategy, you can keep your home cool in warm months and reduce your hot water use without breaking the bank.  Here are a few simple and inexpensive ways for homeowners to cut down on energy costs.

Spring Energy Saving Tips:
  • Fix Leaks – Reduce your hot water use by repairing leaks in your faucets, showerheads, and pipes.  A leak of one drip per second can cost $1 per month.
  • Low-Flow Showerheads – Select a showerhead with a flow rate of less than 2.5 gpm.  Both aerating and laminar-flow showerheads are great for water-efficiency.
  • Low-Flow Faucets – Aerators are inexpensive to replace and they can be an extremely cost-effective water conservation method.
  • Energy-Efficient Dishwashers – Washing dishes by hand several times a day can be more expensive than operating an energy-efficient dishwasher.
  • Energy-Efficient Clothes Washers – Reduce energy costs by using cold or warm water for your laundry loads.  Especially for rinsing!  An inefficient washer will cost up to three times as much to operate as a new, efficient one.  They also offer savings when drying clothes.

Common Plumbing Mistakes

Leaks, clogged drains, and bathroom remodels are all good reasons to call a plumber.  However, there are a few steps that you can take to avoid a plumbing emergency.  Here are a few common plumbing issues and what you can do to prevent them from happening in your home.

Common Plumbing Mistakes:
  • Misusing the Garbage Disposal – Despite the name, most garbage should be thrown away, not put in the garbage disposal.  Disposing of a lot waste down there can cause the blades to stop turning.
  • Placing Weight on Shower Heads – Shower heads are not designed to hold heavy shampoo racks.  Placing weight on plumbing fixtures can cause them to snap right off at the threads.
  • Flushing Objects Down the Toilet – Small toys, tweezers, and other objects should not be flushed down the toilet.  If they get stuck in the trap, the whole toilet has to be removed to retrieve them.
  • Faucet Handle Pressure – Many homeowners are tempted to push down hard on faucets with chronic drips.  However, pushing too hard can break the handle.

What to Consider When Buying a Refrigerator

When shopping for a new refrigerator for your kitchen, you should always consider your needs, goals, and priorities.  Depending on how you plan on using your new appliance, one type of fridge may be more convenient than another.  Here are a few things you should consider before purchasing your new fridge.

Refrigerator Types:
  • Top-Mounted Freezer – This configuration is considered an economical choice for shoppers with budget constraints.  However, they offer less interior capacity and the most frequently visited areas of the fridge are located down low.
  • Side-By-Side – This is the most popular refrigerator type.  It offers convenient access to the freezer and fridge, as well as adequate interior space.  However, since the doors are long and slim, it can be difficult to fit larger foods like pizzas into the freezer.
  • Bottom-Mounted-Freezer – This refrigerator types is very similar to the top-mounted freezer.  The main difference and benefit is that the area of the fridge that is accessed most frequently is at eye level.
  • French Door – This fridge style still features the freezer on the bottom.  However, the opposing half doors open to the fridge rather than one large door.  The style requires less clearance to open.
