At Pipe Wrench Plumbing, we understand that most homeowners don't care to know everything there is about their plumbing systems, especially since your local Knoxville Plumbers specialize in this area and can fix your problems quickly and efficiently. While we are happy to help, we do believe it is important that homeowners educate themselves on how to prevent future plumbing problems. We've gathered some plumbing tips to help get you started.
Check out the following:
- Run water down the drain before and after using the garbage disposer to prevent drains and pipes from getting clogged.
- Locate your emergency shutoff valves underneath sinks and toilets. In the event of a flood, water accumulates quickly, leaving you little time before damage is inevitable.
- Change air conditioner filters monthly. Dust build up affects the efficiency of the system and cause further harm your air conditioning unit or heat pump.
- Clear drains weekly using vinegar and boiling water.
- Check all faucets to make sure water is flowing freely. If a faucet is leaking, you may have cracked pipes.
- Be mindful of what you pour down the sink. This is especially important in the kitchen where waste disposal is frequent.
- Keep an eye on your water meter for any dramatic or unusual increases in usage. A noticeable spike often indicates a leak somewhere on the property.
- Set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Do not flush tissue, cotton balls, makeup pads, sanitary products, or diapers down the toilet. Doing so will cause it to clog.
- Grind oranges and lemons in the garbage disposer for 30 seconds to eliminate odors. Thoroughly rinse remaining debris away.
- Make sure to include strainers in the tub and shower to catch hair and soap chips. Clean the strainers regularly to prevent clogging.
